Signs of Life series
My paintings represent a point in time like a still shot of a hurricane.
This is a reaction to the often dire news stories of nature’s wrath and fury as a result of climate change. I still hold out hope that nature will prevail where life on earth regenerates itself after massive disruptions.
Simultaneously, I draw parallels to my own life and am reminded that there is beauty in overcoming adversity.
To create these paintings. I begin with bold, graphic shapes representing forces of nature inspired by Scandinavian design and Japanese prints. These shapes disrupt and inform organic drawings of exploding plant shrapnel using india ink and a sumi-e brush.
Shockwaves of destruction are absorbed and melt into the composition by filling in with gouache (an opaque watercolor paint). Colors are chosen instinctively to emphasize transformation as well as empowerment; earthtones and pastels are enlivened by unexpected infusions of vibrant color.
The lifecycle of the painting is complete. Perfect harmony is restored. Nature is renewed and thriving.
Sometimes fragile and sometimes fierce, nature has a way of reminding me that life continues after the severest of storms.
